People from all over the world are showing up daily, and they're all here for the same reason: heading out to make the 'big bucks' in a Fort Mac Work Camp. Though opportunity is everywhere, that doesn't mean that when the whistle for the end of the day blows there aren't a few less than ideal ways to spend your down time.
Work in Fort McMurray generally means that you are secluded from the hustle and bustle of a busier town and life, and met with plenty of lapses in which you could be, well...bored. And as whenever there are thousands of workers off of their shift, there are just as many looking to have a good time - one way or another.
The dreary and isolating environment for those who work in Fort McMurray can wear down on one's zeal for life, to put it mildly.
Often cold and drab, these work camps don't supply much in the way of activity and one can only stand so much TV and sitting before a table in a card game. That means that the only other amusement that is to be found is in one of the bars or strip joints in the nearest town. It is not uncommon for many of those who work in Fort McMurray to spend much of their paycheck on booze and 'tips' for the ladies willing to put on a show for them.
Along with beer, there are other vices to be had when a strip show gets carried a bit too far. And the alcohol isn't the only intoxicant to be shared among those who work at Fort McMurray, as there is 'weed' at the mild end on the spectrum on up to just about anything else you could fathom.
When the outside weather is chilly and brutal, a warm bar or men's entertainment facility is all the more inviting, and many choose to do just that - often with their sense numbed by one, if not mutiple prohibited intoxicants.
That is not to say that all of those who work in Fort McMurray lose much of their money on beer and lap dances; there are other means to have one's paycheck be curtailed too. There is plenty of gambling to be had, and when bets get carried a bit too far, workers have been known to lose much of what they made on a poor hand.
Still, it is possible to avoid falling prey to one of the temptations when you are one who works at Fort McMurray, but it can be difficult.
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is why you are there in the first place - to make MONEY. Keep your 'eye on the prize', as they say. Sure there isn't much else to do, and if the majority are taking part, you may need to actively seek out a few like minded companions if you don't want to be spending your non working hours alone.
Still, that is not to say that some of these temptations are wholly bad, but it is to the degree in which they are used. A cold beer after a tough day isn't the same as spending all your earnings at the tap.
